	Message From The President!


As the incoming president for Glendale Healthy Kids, and a relatively new face on the board, I must take a moment to honor three groups of individuals. Firstly, to you, our donors and providers, who have provided the funds and services that have enabled us to dramatically change the lives of children and families. Because of your generosity, fewer children suffer needless pain, fewer parents must miss work to care for a child with health issues, fewer children visit an emergency room, and best of all, more children have a reason to smile. Secondly, to our Staff, who have been relentless in their dedication to educate families and manage the cases that come to us for help. Thirdly, to our Board members and Task Group volunteers, who have demonstrated selfless commitment to our mission. Our role becomes more significant in times of economic pressure. In 2007, more than 500,000 California children, ages five to 17, missed at least one day of school because of dental problems – costing school districts $29.7 million. Those numbers have only worsened. Recent job losses mean the loss of employer sponsored health coverage. The opportunity for Glendale Healthy Kids to step up to the inevitable increase in demand is greater now than ever. My commitment to all of you is to work to build Glendale Healthy Kids into the charity of choice, ensuring that we are excellent stewards of the resources at our disposal. 	Message From The Executive Director!
NO, WE AREN'T WAITING FOR WASHINGTON......... because our kids need help now! While our number for referrals is pretty close to last year at this time, there is a 31% increase in 1st time referrals. As folks lose their jobs, and insurance rates go up, many have to choose between rent, food and medical coverage. We are also seeing an increase in those who have $5,000 deductible amounts. And that is in medical coverage! And for folks who are losing dental coverage, GHK now has instituted "Everyday is Give Kids A Smile Day" We had over 500 applicants: kids who hadn't seen a dentist in year. Those regular check-ups are SO important to prevent major decay. Since the response has been overwhelming for a free exam, cleaning and sealant, we are looking for more dentists! If you are one, all you have to commit to is just one child to be a GHK provider! And to assist even more kids, our 2nd annual "For the Kids Health Fair" will be held on April 17, 2010, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with all sorts of free screenings for the kids, fun educational activities, and information for parents. FREE FREE FREE and proudly supported by Glendale Adventist Medical Center, United Pharmaceutical Network, The Norris Foundation,CVS Pharmacy, Glendale Parks, Recreation & Community Services. Plans are to "take this show on the road" with a smaller, more targeted version, to Hoover High School on April 30, 2010. So, No, we aren't waiting for Washington to help our kids---kids who are healthy and without pain are better able to learn, to test better. That reflects a good school district, and the economy grows where the school district has a good reputation and WE ALL WIN!
