Glendale Healthy Kids is expanding our proactive, health education and screening components.
Yes, we are still responding to the ever growing request for healthcare access as more parents lose their jobs and/or medical and dental insurance coverage.
Our 3rd annual Kids Health and Fitness Expo will be Saturday, April 9, 2011.
Yet, there might be kids who can’t get to that event with their parents. So we are partnering with local middle and high schools to provide these same types of resources: on campus, and adding components which have meaning for these kids. As an example:
Hoover High School: 600 9th graders had the opportunity to have screening for vision & color blindness, dental and orthodontic screening, Body Mass Index testinginformation on bullying and cyber safety, youth employment opportunities, and safe driving techniques with the California Highway Patrol to name a few. No surprise 9% are obese and 25% overweight, and one young lady was referred for orthodontic evaluation.
An “in school” assembly for 6th grade students provided nutritional information and showed us that 96% of students who had Dental Ed in the 1st grade take care of their teeth, and visited the dentist within the last 6 months. More of these same students tell us that dental health is important to overall health, that foods affect oral health and brush at least twice a day. Needless to say, of those who did not have Dental Ed in 1st grade, the numbers are much lower in the same areas. Thanks, Dental; Ed Volunteers, for continuing to make a difference into the future.
So GHK will continue to grow all of these programs that will enable us to meet a need BEFORE it becomes a crisis. To accomplish this, volunteers are always needed, and of course, the dollars to provide these opportunities.
Thank you all for making a difference today which will impact our kids far into the future!
Thank you!!!!
